What I’m listening to: Spotify Wrapped, just like everybody else. I was in the top 0.5% of Haim listeners this year, which I suppose is not a surprise given how much I love Haim. Haim, Haim, Haim. The biggest surprise for me was that two Emeli Sande songs landed in my top 5 (“Oxygen” and “There Isn’t Much”) – surprising because I didn’t realize how much I was listening to her – and to my American drafters if you do not know Emeli yet please please listen. (Fun fact: Her birth name is Adele, but when she started performing she was like, well, that’s obviously not going to happen.)
What I’m watching: We started this four part doc about this Pepsi commercial in the 90s that promised a Harrier Jet for 7,000,000 Pepsi points without a disclaimer. Some kid from Seattle held Pepsi to it. It’s interesting and hilarious to watch these people from Pepsi and BBDO talk about the ideas and bringing it to like which is literally my job and then be like “it was clearly a joke” and walking through the nightmare of it and how legal has to save them which Brad loves because that is literally his job so he feels smug bug sitting next to me on the couch so we’ll see how it ends. (The show, that is.) Also, they interview Cindy Crawford! It’s called Pepsi Where’s My Jet? and it’s on Netflix.
What I’m reading: I started Molly Shannon’s memoir, Hello, Molly. The book opens with her mother, sister and cousin died in a car accident when she was four while her father was driving the whole family home. She threads through how that experience and her relationship with her father influenced her as a performer. Fascinating. Also, at 13 she and a friend snuck onto a flight to NYC and spent the day by themselves in the city? It’s wild. The book is a breezy read from an entertainer I really like and admire (PLEASE watch The Other Two) and I’m looking forward to reading more.
Also, I finished Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Danielle Zevin last night and I loved it. The final two chapters were incredibly moving. One of my favorites from the year. Recommend!
What I ate: Not Pepsi.
What I can’t stop thinking about: White Lotus. Yall. (There will be spoilers here if you haven’t caught up on the second season.) I can’t stop thinking about who they’re going to kill off and battling around all the theories in my head. Right now my bet is on Jennifer Coolidge and Portia with those gays; I think they’re in on in with Coolidge’s husband who will pay them off or split her insurance or something. (Is her husband the Wyoming cowboy?!) Though there could be a world where it’s Aubrey Plaza’s husband because she could actually already be having an affair with the hot guy and they get rid of him to cover it up and then take the money? Or it could go the other way where her husband rages and kills the hot guy. (I really should learn these characters’ names. Can anyone even follow what I’m saying?) Anyway. White Lotus!!
