I’m going to try and send these toward the end of the week as a stamp in time and recap, even if I’m the only person who goes back and looks at them. Or send me your recs for next week!
What I’m listening to: No One Dies From Love by Tove Lo. I make a playlist for the gym every quarter, the month before that season starts so that on the first day of, say, the summer month (June) it’s ready to go. This song, from my Summer and Fall playlists, just got added to my Winter one, as well. The beat drop is so good, but it’s no match for the drama of the line “No on dies from love / Guess I’ll be the first.” I’ll still be lifting (REALLY HEAVY) weights to it on Dec. 1.
What I’m watching: I started The Crown, because it’s the best. Clear the calendars. I was a touch drunk when we put on episode 1, but what I can tell so far is: 1) Diana towers over everyone, 2) Charles is somehow handsome, 3) they still have the budgets to create the most visually impressive show on television. I cannot wait. Let the dramas begin.
What I’m reading: All Down Darkness Wide by Seán Hewitt. It’s … sad. I don’t know why I didn’t anticipate that a book about a gay millennial struggling with his boyfriend’s depression and suicide attempt would be intense, but, then again, I didn’t read the full synopsis because Garth Greenwell recommended it on Instagram and I liked the cover. Anyway. Hewitt is also a poet so it’s lyrical and one of those books that kind of drives me crazy in the whole navel-gazing, 200 pages in and like “wait what is this about” absence of plot thing – a biproduct of Twitter, I’m convinced – but that I appreciate for the way the words sing on the page. (See also: Fake Accounts; No One is Talking About This). Hewitt in particular has some scenes discussing his own upbringing, or the joy he finds in his research on poetry, that sneak up on me and feel like an old note found in a pants pocket.
What I ate: Brad made salmon with this Japanese BBQ sauce, after we had it at a friend’s house. (Hi Stephen!). It was so good. And just as good the next day warmed up in the microwave at work!
What I can’t stop thinking about: Y’all, this Twitter thing is a mess. (And I cannot look away.)
